A new strategy document, Victoria’s 2020 Tourism Strategy, has been released by Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher. The document outlines the short-, medium-, and long-term actions that can be taken by the tourism industry in Victoria in order to achieve the goal of growing overnight tourism expenditure to $24.7 billion by 2020. Seven major areas have been identified for Victorian tourism to focus on over the next seven years:
1. Digital excellence
2. International marketing
3. Domestic marketing
4. Major and business events
5. Air services attraction
6. Investment attraction & infrastructure development

When we made the decision to begin redesigning our corporate site, we wanted to give it so much more than a contemporary look. There are new challenges facing the tourism and media industries every day and it’s so important to have a web presence that accurately reflects what we do and our company’s approach to our business.
With that in mind we’ve updated and rewritten the information on every page, made navigation more user-friendly, and changed the format of our news reporting. It’s also easier than ever to contact us and make an enquiry or provide feedback.

With two new TourismTouchscreens and heaps of new content being produced, Derby WA in the West Kimberley region has a great presence on the network. Check out the wall-mounted unit at Derby Visitor Centre, or the Countertop at the Spinifex Hotel. Both units are now internet-connected and providing local and regional information to visitors to Derby!
On July 27th, Muddy the Datatrax crab was the only corporate sponsored crustacean in a field of 100 mud crabs in ten heats at the Derby Mud Crab Races.
It turned out that Muddy was so focused on learning about the very latest development in tourism information technology that he lost all interest in the race, but fortunately is now able to find local and national travel information on his crabphone.
A special shout-out goes to Technical Support Manager Steve Nichol this month! Steve has accomplished his first solo installation at the Blue Mountains Explorer bus terminal in Katoomba, complete with 24-hour access. The location is adjacent to the Katoomba train station and gets fantastic exposure, not just to visitors booking at Blue Mountains Explorer, but all incoming and outgoing passengers to the Blue Mountains region. Great work Steve! This location continues to solidify our strong presence in the Blue Mountains, and joins the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, Blue Mountains Antiques in Leura, Lilianfels Resort & Spa, and the Lithgow Visitor Information Centre.
Datatrax has had another exciting month of installations and upgrades across the network. With two installs crews travelling concurrently through the north and the south, we’ve been able to both add new locations to the TourismTouchscreen Network and bring more kiosks online in the month of June.
We are very pleased to welcome the Kakadu National Park Visitor Information Centre and the Cape Otway Lightstation to the network. Other upgraded members include the visitor information centres in Darwin, Katherine, Yarrawonga, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Yarra Valley, and Dandenong Ranges, and many sites are helping to promote downloads of the Take You There mobile app with banner displays.

In response to Destination New South Wales’ analysis of international visitation and the result that visitors from China spend close to twice as much on overnight stays in New South Wales than those from any other market, Datatrax is pleased to announce the integration of Chinese text into the internet-based TourismTouchscreen navigation system! Visitor information centres who host an online TourismTouchscreen can now provide a Chinese-language service and keep bringing down barriers to international visitors.
With the recent round of upgrades, over 47% of the entire network is now fully interconnected via the internet, with another 14% signed on and awaiting internet connection, and we will be fully networked by 2014. After having visited eight sites in NSW, the Datatrax Install and Maintenance Team have exceeded our rollout expectations in April and May as they made their way north through Queensland. Of the 20 sites visited in just five weeks, 18 have been upgraded to the new online TourismTouchscreen Network! They are now providing internet-based features to their visitors and helping to promote the Take You There mobile app with banners placed in partner visitor centres. The new features include local mapping, directions, weather, and links to their official tourism website.
Partner visitor centres at Dungog, Alice Springs, and Katherine are now preparing to go online, and we are very pleased to welcome the Sunshine Coast’s Australia Zoo, Brisbane’s Mount Coot-tha Lookout, and also the Blue Mountains Explorer bus depot to the TourismTouchscreen Network.
